Jan Willem paints with light, call it action painting but with light projection. This idea arose during his graduation at the High School for the Arts in Utrecht (fine art) in 2008.
At the time he was researching a way to accelerate his painting process on the basis of projection using computer programs; in other words, how he could paint a canvas without applying physical paint.
At first it was simple color projections, but soon he discovered a way to 'paint' his paintings with light. Through experimentation he discovered that the human body could also be the carrier for a projection, this idea was the basis for the concept that would later become LiGHT-UP.
